“Is it your birthday?”

June 23rd, 2011

I haven’t made a major yarn purchase since Vogue Knitting Live in January. and boy was that a major purchase. I decided to put myself on a diet, I mean I have plenty of yarn, projects, and half thought out ideas I could be working on.

Then yesterday, my office was evacuated due to a suspicious package in the trash by the entrance.  It was a little after 4 when the VP called the CEO and I had to laugh when he asked specifically if I had my purse. I am the only long distance Public Transportation commuter, so I get it, but aw.  So after a quick does anybody have any dire need to stay? No? Go home.  One coworker who’s only computer was in the office and had a deadline gave up after 5:15 so it was a good decision.

A coworker gave me a lift an I was pulling into Penn Station via train by 5pm.  So back in the city by five on a work day. I usually get to midtown by 7:30.  Just in time for everything to be closed or closing by the time I get to it.

I had a Groupon for Knitty City so I decided to head up there.

And headed out with that.  While I was being rung up the owner asked if it was my birthday.

“No…but I have a Groupon and lace is on sale…and I haven’t bought yarn in six months…”  As if that made it better, and what I didn’t notice til I was rung up, its all Madeline Tosh.

They had the merino light in City Lights. You remember my love of the city lights in worsted right?

Now I have 840 yards of it to do as I will :D .

I also grabbed 2 skeins of worsted that I want to make gloves out of.  Tart and Nebula.  Timelords come to mind.

And finally a Skein that I want to make  the Eiffel Tower Shawl (ravelry link)  with.  At about 900 yards that should be enough for the medium size.

More Markers and NYC Yarn Crawl

October 12th, 2009

So the Yarn Crawl was fun. I did not do much of any crawling as my wallet would not have approved. So instead I headed to Knitty City on Saturday for my talk. I have to say the store was packed. My talk went well, I set up at one of the tables. I had my squares, the Lantern Scarf, and of course the Justice league Scarf.

It went well. I was off my outline in the first few minutes. But it was a good way in that it became a more organic conversation. I also never realized just how different my method of double knitting was. With the way I carry colors and add. At some point I may have to create diagrams.

I’ve also gotten a few ideas about more projects and I wonder if I have reasons for more color adds. I’ve done 4 colors or technically 3 with the third color as 2 strands.

I also sold a set of stitch markers. The face of boe markers which were my favorite ones that I made. I have made 2 more sets and will start adding things to Etsy soon.

So more Stitch Markers.

Progress and Fail all in one

June 4th, 2009

How do we have Progress and fail all in one? Remember the candle flame shawl I started? In shades of purple blue and greens. Well I had always planned to use that yarn for a shawl. The only catch was I had planned to make a much lighter one. So I knew I didn’t have enough yarn. I headed over to Gotta Knit during lunch to get more and of course that color scheme is long gone.

This yarn fuzzes like there is no tomorrow, or like there is mohair hiding in its acrylic wool blend.  So frogging is not an option.I have gotten maybe 1/2 of the way done with 2 1/2 skeins of the 3 I had.

candle flame Its coming along well. I have memorized the repeat rows after leaving the pattern in a friend’s car and in fact being able to knit for hours without it.  But right now it drapes over my 13″ MacBook. You know the one the background for 95% of my pictures. Not nearly enough for keeping me warm at work. I may also in the future attempt a shrug for the same reason. The weather has been weird enough that the AC has not been cranked up to max yet. Though today it was fixed to be “cooler” in general.

100_2851But back to the shawl. The ladies at Gotta Knit were very helpful, and helped me select the three above colors to continue the shawl. My only questions become what order should they be knit in, and should I do two repeats or one. two repeats would give you one solid flame and half of another. One would be 1/2 of a flame though opposite ends.

Or take the advice of a friend and have vertical lines of color.  \ | / So each of those lines would be and equal part of the pattern. I may have to go on Ravelry and look around and see what else has been done to this pattern and if its what i have in mind.

At Gotta Knit they were also looking at things that the Author had sent for their copy of Reversable Knits. I will likely be picking up this book at some time as from what I saw all but one project was double knit.  How could I not? Just the lace weight scarf was enough to get me wondering. And the DK scarf that was cabled on one side and striped on the other.

Restraint, I lack it.

April 28th, 2009

So I went to The Point closing sale and wow. The place was picked clean! I doubt there will be much of anything left tomorrow to be honest. I totally spent more than I should anyway.

PurchasesSee there’s a book too so I’m not that bad really.  But yes 2 skeins of the orange 2 of the purple, 1 burgundy, and 1 blue purple mix. Most are fingering weight and I was thinking shawl or some other such thing from the orange, gloves maybe from the purple. And a hat possibly from the red.

The book Pretty in Punk, had caught my eye a few times so I was willing to pick it up at 30% off. Couple projects to add to the super queue.

I also got a size 0 40″ bamboo circular that I have already used to redo the cast on and start of a Dalek, (Extermaknit by Penwiper) using Karabella Aurora 4 in black and white for the first one. I may do the red supreme next or switch back to the Tardis.

Organization

So I’ve organized the stash more or less. There are a few balls here and there without a home that are “WIPs” If I had cast on it might be more believable. But here are  some shots of my stash in its neat glory. Can we tell red is one of my favorite colors?

yarnYarn assortmentI really like red, though I have to find a project for the red/black cascade. Or should I say a sweater. I have also organized my tools notions and the like.

notionsNeat and organized.

I’m also planning to break my no yarn buying rule. I made it a few weeks I think but The Point is closing! 30% off everything. I won’t go too crazy….no more than $60? I mean I spent about that much at Knit NY’s moving sale and it was 20% off and their prices were a bit high to begin with.

This is the third closing I’ve been to in way too little time.

Yarn Connection, Knit NY, and now the Point. Though I did miss the Stitches East closing. And I really liked the point, baked goods, awesome people and yarn what’s not to love.
