The Answer is Always 42

August 30th, 2012

I finally finished the spinning project I started during the TDF.  Yatta! I have 462 yards of a mostly fingering weight and I suddenly understand what took so long.   I spun over 900 yards to get this yarn  eep.  I think my idea to spin my next yarn worsted is a good one for sanity sake.  Also getting a 2yd Noddy was a very good plan.  Now I will just start pondering a spinning wheel.

It’s  now drying  in the breeze of a window and if the yarn can be dry by Monday, which shouldn’t be a problem; I may attempt to wind it, and bring it on my rescheduled due to Hurricane work trips.  I had planned to make a Hitchhiker and then I noticed the name of the pattern set; Hitchhiker – a Trilogy of Four Patterns . I had never realized in all this time that Hitchhiker was That  Hitchhiker.  Which is even more fitting as I won’t be in Atlanta this weekend having a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster (all I can tell you was it was blue, tasty,  and it was in the spirit of Dragon*Con at a nearby restaurant).  Alas, I am also tempted to make Trillian.  Decisions Decsions.

Well that also means I am ready for a new spinning project. I did pick up a Craftsy Class - Spinning dyed fibers   that I want to work through with a grey and blue braid I picked up during a moment of high TDF goals.  Photo by wskbyheather

Alternatively I have the colorway  Jealously from Expertly dyed  photo by Expertly Dyed.

Hopefully this weekend I will have some time to sit through the videos and if I prefer trying the techniques one one fiber or the other.

It’s Friday, and I finished something

I’ve been experiencing a slight case of knit every pattern that catches my eye. Or at least start it.

The latest in a long list of things I’ve started. That’s one repeat down and seven more to go, before I have to start deciding on buttons for my Tilting Tardis Cowl. I should be done with it by the time I land in Houston.  But, as the title says I finished something.

It is a very small cowl on fire made of red bulky wool my sister picked up for me while she was in Italy. Florence I believe but she was in a lot of places, Milan, Rome, Venice, so no idea.  I had thought about adding a center section with some black or red Eco wool that I had and decided against it. I may just use this with a couple high collar jackets I have that still don’t completely protect against the wind but make a regular scarf or cowl odd.

Packing…

August 23rd, 2012

Alas, this post is not about prepping for Dragon*Con, no parade, time travelers and pirates, or villains ball for me this year. I will be at home instead. Next year,  D*C, next year. I will be back! And in the Westin, because it’s my favorite.

Instead I am packing for a work trip from Sunday to Weds. And clothes I don’t blink at, but Items to keep me entertained? Now those are important. Items that go with out saying are the kindle, and iPad.  Fully charged and ready. Because I have layovers, and combined with getting to the airport early, that’s time on my hands.

1) NYC – Charlotte – Houston  5+hrs
2) Houston – Charlotte – Tampa 5+hrs
3) Tampa  - NYC  ~3hrs

Combine the layovers with the fact that I can’t sleep on planes, 99% of the time and that is a lot of time to kill.  Enter yarn.

  1. Featherweight Cardigan – takes up limited space maximizes mindless knitting when reading on my kindle.
  2. Tilting Tardis cowl – small fun, looks like an easy to memorize pattern
  3. Another Pretty Thing  cowl
  4. Adoro (but do I really want to work on beads and moving for the first time?)
  5.  To  be determined shawl
  6. To be determined glove pattern
  7. TBD Hat
  8. Lothlorien Cape

Yes I do understand that is a bit of over kill when considering I took less knitting to London.  But there is the threat of a Hurricane while in Tampa, that is also threatening the RNC… How I ended up in the same town as the the RNC and not Nerdi-Gras I have no idea.  Even if my flight is not cancelled I see a delay being possible. So more yarn, and more books!  Oh and some clothes I guess…

So it’s time to download/print patterns, find  my notions case, collect needles, and project bags (I need more of these), and decide what will be my carry on “purse” to fit the work computer and at least a couple projects. Sadly my usual bag tore on the way back from London and replacing it was low on my to do list, ‘I’m not traveling again this year I have plenty of time…’ rightttt.  Maybe if I had remember this in time to try and choose a new one and have it shipped…

Still working my way through finishing plying my Mordor batt and the orange yarn, this is clearly going to be the largest skein I have ever completed. I am down to the last two colors on the batt and may have to spin up some more orange to complete the skein.

As you can see there is way less orange left. I still have about a quarter of the braid so it is not a problem. The one hope I have is that the orange is pretty much lace weight at this point so the yardage may even out with the thicker main batt. We’ll see. I am looking forward to starting a new project as I really want to make a hat out of one or two of the  fiber sets I have. One a Loop batt that goes grey, blue, and purple.  The other a blue and grey braid, but first one must spin.

Or in this case winners. Using a Random Number Generator.  I got 3 and 10 Which makes things pretty easy post three was Nermin so you just won the vanishing Tardis Earrings and 10 was Lexie B so you have won the blue Tardis earrings. I shall be emailing you both shortly for your mailing addresses and the like.

Congrats, and I’m sure I’ll do this again. A different Fandom next time.  So if Dr. Who wasn’t your thing maybe the next one will be.

That right there is a sleeve for my oft neglected  Vivan Sweater. As you all know it has been languishing since I started the sleeve.  The picture below was from October, and as of two days ago was still relevant.

But now I am moving forward. I have half a sleeve and have gotten back into the grove of this pattern.  It amazed me how fast once I got started I had everything going alone.  Let’s hope this does not become another Batman scarf.

But it fits so nicely. I want to finish this sweater so I can wear it. Possibly to Rhinebeck as it does not cross weekends with NYCC this year.

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to sparklemotion

So, I have noticed a trend in my yarn/fiber purchases. And that trend is sparkle!  I’m not usually a sparkly person (unless one would like the count the fact that I currently wearing eight rings but only two have stones, and one is the ring to rule them all…). But, as it has been said, Once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence, three times is a trend.

Once – Remember Mordor?

While the orange yarn is not sparkled the main yarn sure is.

Twice – Recycled Granny (A local Brooklyn! dyer)

My local LYS had a basket of yarn with sparkle.  And I had one of those foolish moments if only this yarn came in…oh there is exactly what I was thinking of….

Third – A Stash Addict

So A Stash Addict developed a new yarn line called Dark Arts. I mean really was I not supposed to be stalking this yarn? Really? To make things even better I was searching for a red and grey variegated yarn the week before and was starting to wonder if I would just have to spin some up, as I kept finding the right color scheme in fiber.

So Sparkle is a thing I do now.

So, Remember when  I made Avengers Stitch Markers. The whole team got in on the action. And Loki, and the Bifrost.

No one thought that was all did they? So what else have I gotten up to? Earrings of course. I blame having gold spikes.  Loki Earrings.

And well you can’t have a villain without a hero. So first up, the First Avenger.

As usual everything is available in my Etsy shop.

Crossing the Finish Line…sorta

So the Ravellenic Games ended last night.  How did I do?

Not even if you squint can you call that a finished sweater. I am four inches away from the ribbing edging, but because I have so much yarn I am planning to make a longer sweater.

But there are arm holes, so some progress. The dangerous thing is I have a lot of worsted purple yarn I want to turn into something cabled. But I should finish the Featherweight Cardigan first.

I did finish one project during the games.

The quick knit on the Cowl on Fire.

And on items still in progress:

The gloves to match the Habitat I finished. Some progress.  How did everyone else make out in the games?
