More Nerd Wars

February 28th, 2012

I finished a couple more items for my team. One being the second cowl.  Submitted in the Technical category under What’s your specialty?

So it’s done. Again. With some yarn to spare.

But it does mean I can add details to the pattern like length and width, and can say you can make two with two skeins of Eco-Wool. Which was something I wasn’t sure about.

I also finished a pair of  fingerless gloves.

I still have to make the inner gloves for these but there is one more project down with another day to go.  So there are four projects done and the start to my dissertation.  I think February went well, much more knitting then I tend to get done and spinning. Looking forward to seeing what the March Challenges bring.

Friday Plots

Making progress on the last  Nerd Wars Submission I am attempting for Feb as well as some progress on the “easy” part of the dissertation.

6 rows then bind off and its done. Or it would be  if I would stop reading books on the bus this may happen though I did just finish A Perfect Blood and bought  The knitgrrl Guide to Professional Knitwear Design which seemed like a good thing to get my butt moving in gear as once those rows are done I will be able to measure the cowl and take some photos for the pattern.

Looking at the picture above, I wonder if I just shouldn’t take pictures of items with just the lovely backdrop of my cubicle.  With my camera slowly falling to pieces it may just be time to invest in a new one.

Now to get the heck out of work. It’s Friday after all.

Yarn!! My Precious!

February 21st, 2012

When we last left our yarn it was waiting to become two-ply.

So I had yarn, I washed it and left it drying on the Niddy Noddy for a few days, but this past weekend I had to wind into a skein.

A bulky two ply of black and sparkly purple. It came out to about 43 yards, but that red yarn in the corner has a black partner that I think can be combined to make me a warm and mostly hand spun cowl or the like. And I needed to wind this yarn as I have completed another project for the Nerd Wars. A skein of yarn called Phoenix from my Loop hot stuff batt that I picked  up at VKL. One of these days I will get to one of her Etsy updates before she is cleaned out.

I have 132 Yards, of a mostly worsted weight drying on the Niddy Noddy.

So now I have the next week to finish a birthday present in time for Sunday, Finish the cowl by the 29th though I do only have 11 more rows at 360 stitches per row. Still not positive I can make two full cowls from 1 Skein of Eco-wool each but I will give it my best shot.

Submitted my first item for NerdWars. Bifrost gloves, for the technical challenge on mnemonic devices. I settled on Roy G. Biv.

It was a very simple pattern I cam up with and knit during a meeting on Sunday on size 3 DPN’s.

With  red CO 32, K3 p1 for 8 rows
Change to Orange Knit 8 rows in ST
Change to Yellow Knit 8 rows in ST
Change to Green Knit 8 rows in ST
Change to Blue Knit 1 rows in ST
Knit 12 cast off eight stitches knit to end of the round
Knit 12 Cast on eight stitches and continue knitting in ST for 5 rows
Change to Indigo Knit 8 rows in ST
Change to Purple  Knit 8 rows in ST

Bind off

And I created the swatch for what I hope to be my dissertation.  The soon to be knit Apollo shawl.

And I have once again cast on for the Greek Key Cowl.  I will find out if you can make two  with two skeins of eco wool, or if there will be screaming near the end of the project.

In Progress: Lots

I have a lot of projects in progress. And keep casting on new ones. I don’t usually have this problem but I am enjoying it, except for the weight of my purse with so much yarn in it. 1 and 1/4 gloves. Started these during the Superbowl and am plowing through the pattern.

Welig once again, I’m always surprised at how fast a knit this pattern is.  I have another set of these to work on. And a pair of gloves to go with these in gray.

Here are the Octopus mittens once again this time two at a time on circular needles. I have just gotten to the cuff work and haven’t had any time to work on it in a few days but yay progress.

The start of rock Island, I have to repeat the same 8 rows over seventy times, I think I am at repeat 14, I am sure once that is done I will move along on this shawl much more quickly. And if you know I do more than one repeat every time I picked it up.  Speaking of not picking something up.

Lothlorien. I think I did one repeat in the last two weeks. Sigh.  And poor Vivian looks like this, still. This picture is from October.  Fail.

I need to finish things, not start new ones but its hard to tell myself that, especially when I want to knit things, to wear in March. What is happening in March?

I am going to LONDON Weee! I still have no idea what I will be doing during the time but I will be there for about a week, with some work commitments when I land then free time the rest of the week.  More awesome my trip falls the same weekend as the Doctor Who convention.  Not sure if I will actually go, unless magic happens with the conversion rate or I have a surprise cash windfall but that is amazing timing. Sadly the Doctor Who Experience will be closed before I arrive.

So I need to find things to do, I went to London in 2008 so I did a lot of things then, London Eye, The Tower, Tate Modern, The National Gallery, Imperial War Museum, Platform 9 3/4,  that I likely won’t repeat. Though somehow I didn’t get to The British Museum which will be rectified. Any ideas? I’ll be poking my native friends, so I won’t totally be at loose ends but I’d like to have a list of sorts. Case in point I had a list of 20 or so attractions, grouped by location, on my first trip and would see how many I could get to on any given day.  Then repeat the next day.  It meant that I was free to as much or as little on a day and not feel crushing guilt.  And you know any secret Yarn and Fiber havens are things I would like to know.

Happy Birthday!

Today is the third Birthday of the blog.  Cake!

I have decided that Minas Tirith will be the cake for my 30th birthday, so the blog can hold on to it for now.  I should start figuring out how that will happen, luckily I have a few years to work that out.

So I have  finished spinning the purple yarn.  It is sparkly.

I want to ply it with the black yarn and make a black and purple something. I suppose the something will depend on what my finished yardage actually is.  Now to figure out how to ply these together, I learned the basics just hoping I remember them. To the INTERNET!  *trips on cape*

Woe.

So I finished my Cowl.

Double knit in all its lovely glory. On Thursday I brought it to knitting to share with the group and take some pictures of it.

Somehow between the end of the night and my apartment, the cowl walked away. I have not seen hide nor hair of said cowl since Thursday, and while I do have days when I misplace things there isn’t anywhere left that I could look. I would have to have shoved this cowl under a dresser in a sleepwalking haze to have not been able to find it in the last four days.

I continue to hold a small amount of hope that it somehow fell into that one magical corner where I will find it in a month, but the apartment isn’t that big. And while I have no idea how it fell out of my bag, nor how I didn’t notice, I think I just have to accept that it did.  This isn’t helping with writing the pattern for the shawl either but I suppose that this means that it is out in the wild somewhere and I can knit it again.   I do really want to see it in white and gold.  I have already done it red and black as well as a shorter cowl.

I think I will have to just try not to think of it, and knit another one. But, losing a knit before even getting a chance to ever wear it is disheartening. I think I will work on the gloves i’ve been commissioned for and not think about it for a while or ever.
