And We Have a Winner

March 8th, 2013

Reasons why I should never plan to do a post a knit night. There was sake, sushi, surprise friends, a Bellini. And my iPad never came out of my bag.  Through a very scientific process I have chosen a winner.

You can even see the steps in the process it began with post it notes and scissors.

Then they were all thrown into a damp alpaca hat. What? It’s snowing, my hat’s a little damp still.

2013-03-08 11.52.31

A little shake of the hat and I pulled out a winner.

It may be hard to make out that smudge of a pen slash but that is a 1. So the winner is SunnyStrings on Ravelry. I shall be messaging her to get her new set of makers. Anyone making the most of the snow? I pulled on black jeans and my Doc Martins, if not for my oversized cabled sweater, I’d say the  concert going teen me was making an appearance.

Also I have decided I need, an oversized, red pullover, in the softest warmest wool possible for days like today.

The Same Thing We Do Every Night…

March 4th, 2013

So I’ve been trying to take over the world. It’s a nightly process, I’ll get to it. In the mean time I am slowly working my way through a  few other places.  I have masks, I will be cleverly disguised.

But to be a tad bit serious, I’ve started blogging at a couple locations Once a week for each right now but that may grow. Well I have wanted to write more, I just thought it would be in Scrivener not WordPress  You all have already seen my posts over at the Nerd Wars blog for Mythological Mondays.  The other place I shall be posting is GeekCrafts. So far I have an introduction post and some time to find a fun nerdy tutorial, or something for my next Friday post.  So feel  free to point to me anything you think would be handy.

Also there’s still some time to win some Aquaman in your life in the blog birthday post.

Woops! Happy Blog Birthday it’s post 301 and a Giveaway!

February 25th, 2013

As the title says. I missed the Blog’s Birthday, way back on the 7th of February. I for some reason always think it is near the end of the month. Sigh. Also the last post was 300.  That’s none too shabby. From the far long ago place of designing the JL scarf.  Which has an updated pattern at the usual link or on Ravelry.

I’ve been using my own set on my Allegheny sweater and it does make me grin.  And it makes me glad that there will be another Justice League member done up in stitch markers.

Geek Out Sunday: Let’s talk about Myth

January 27th, 2013

For those who have been playing along I have been on Nerd Wars Team Mythology, for three tournaments now. For T7 I and another team member will be writing regular posts for the Team Mythology Blog. We will be talking about, myths, legends, folktales, lore, fairy tales, and who knows what else.

When I first applied to Nerd Wars I was a bit overwhelmed as there are, so many, teams I would fit on (Hellmouth, Tardis, Impala, 1-up, Writer, Shady Cells, so many teams) I can’t remember which three teams I chose, for that first sign up, but it was one of those, ‘any of these will be awesome’ and since then I have pretty much stuck with Team Mythology.

What do I like so much about Mythology? One it’s the way people tried to explain things, I once spent quite some time going through all the creation mythologies I could get my hands on. That fell apart mostly because I could not seem to stop at one single myth for any group. I’m pretty sure that was my first introduction to Norse mythology outside of Marvel’s Thor, and I was hooked.

There are gaps and holes in my mythological knowledge. In Nerd Wars I tended to default to Norse or Greek gods, though Egyptians are my actual favorites when trying to tie a project to my team.  One project I never finished would have been tied to a Babylonian god, which I can’t remember now, possibly Tiamet if it is the repurposed yarn dying/knitting plan.

I plan to pull out the books of myths and legends off my shelf, and maybe share the fact that neither do Alligators, nor Ninja Turtles live in our sewers. Though I do have two encyclopedias of mythical creators to thumb through and, a few different, gods, myths, and creatures of the ______ age/people. Do you have any favorite pantheons, mythologies, or legends?

Book Corner: 100 books in 2013….

January 24th, 2013

As I mentioned yesterday my reading has been consuming my knitting time. Pretty much from when I started and finished Cold Days. I’ve been reading and asking around for recommendations for new books. I also have been going through my kindle for all those books I grabbed when they were $1.99 or the like and reading the ones that jumped out at me.

I read all of Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series, and am happy to hear there will be a sequel series of sorts this fall. I  just thought the series was very fun and it makes me quite happy to be able to dive into this world once again.

I have started Hounded Book 1 of The Iron Druid Chronicles  which was recommended as a fix while waiting for the next Dresden book over at Knit 1 Geek 2‘s most recent podcast episode.  I’ve finished book one and started book two. Hexed. It is great fun and Oberon is highly amusing, I realized how little I  remember of Celtic Mythology, and don’t get me started on druids. That may be a project for later.

And I have a thread going on my Ravelry group asking for book recommendations. I also have a friend that I think every other time I see him we dissolve into a conversation about books, movies, comics, and I start taking notes.  The notes app is quite handy.

So what this list look like? It’s a mesh of Authors and Main Characters and googlable phrases to get me going.

Z a mansfield
Rick Reid
A study in emerald gaiman
Guardians of the flame
Wheel of time Robert Jordan
Sword of truth terry goodkind
So you want be a wizard
Nicolas flamell achalmist series
terry pratchett the hog father
Bloody good Georgia Evans
Vampire for hire – moondance
Brandon Sanderson – steel heart
Mira grant feed and deadline
The black cauldron lloyd alexander b1 – the book of 3
Yasmin Gelanor
Felix castor MC – mike carey – Author
Spin –  Robert Charles Wilson
How to fix a broken mechanical heart
Kerri vaugh – after the golden age
Jasper ford

I’m always collecting recommendations and removing them from the list when I grab the book in any format.  Like for a time Parasol Protectorate was on this list.  And there have been moments when I got recommendations moved to add them to the list and realize that they are already there. And there is the fact I decided to attempt to read 100 books in 2013.  Two books a week ish. We’ll see how I do.

Geek Out Sunday: Parasol Protectorate

January 13th, 2013

Well i missed this last week but as i watch an out of order Star Trek Marathon, so far whales have been saved, and now we’re preserving first contact. What better time for some geeky fun.? During the Christmas break I started reading Soulless by Gail Carriger, Book one of the Parasol Protectorate. I had great fun reading that and started Changeless the second book in the series earlier this week. I have been lacking a good new book since finishing Cold Days and going through the pile of unread yet purchased books on my kindle that jumped out at me.

20130113-192027.jpg

With this describing blurb there was really no chance for me:
SOULLESS is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

The first book was great fun, and the second has started out just as well. Who doesn’t appreciate someone getting a good thwack with a parasol? Why did I enjoy the book so much? Not only is there a great main character, a mystery to solve and a fun setting. The secondary characters are fantastic.

From Ivy, and her dear dear hats, to Lord Akeldama, Professor Lyall, and Floote. So many fun characters to enjoy. And so many more. Werewolves, Vampires, Spinsters, and more. This book does the most important thing for me starting a new series. Something, different and its not, the time, or the alt-history steampunk twist but that does help as well.

Owls: The’ve been around

January 6th, 2013

If you have visited the Etsy shop, Ravelry Group or taken a look at my patterns, you may have noticed a regular addition.  He was also on my little Christmas Card. Who am I talking about?

The One Geek Owl, he sometimes gets dressed up.  He likes to cosplay as much as I do. Why an owl needs a broom to fly I don’t ask.  But he has a handy perch and I’ve been using him on my things for a while. Drawn by a friend, its been quietly slipped into a few places.

So why an owl of all things? Lot’s of reasons. The biggest being the association with Wisdom and Athena.  Followed closely by such lovely owls, as Hedwig,  and Archimedes. And at the end of the day I like owls. When I started to think about what I wanted as quick representation, I thought about all the corners I poke around in and the interests I had.

Really it became a case of owl or a phoenix. As much as a lot of my work is a nod to one thing or another that I love, owls seem to both weave in and out of that, and tie back to quite a few things I enjoy. Much like my own wandering eye.  Books, mythology,  movies, comics, I mean Marvel even has The…Owl…moving right along.

So if anyone has been wondering about the wandering owl, expect to see more of him,  I like owls, they are cool.

Looking Forward Etsy in 2013

January 5th, 2013

Comparing my Etsy shop in 2011 and 2012 is has grown a lot, as I find my flow, which seems to be a combination of  geeky jewelry and stitch markers. Both overt and covert. I had a great conversation about video games, Nintendo, game shops, all because I was wearing my invincibility star earrings, when I went to pick up my new boots.

Going forward I want to continue that trend, of having items that are attention catching to some.  Being at an event or party and starting a conversation, because someone asks if your earrings are a Tardis, or just a  really pretty blue.

And somedays you  decide to show some  Potter Pride. Because otherwise you are in a suit for work  and where is the fun in that? Did I mention I just bought purple leather boots? Yeah I like adding a dash of quirk.

So with that I think I want to have more regular updates. Starting with Monthly updates, excluding restocking, or re-listing items. And possibly growing to bi-weekly in the summer, and weekly around the holidays.

That way everyone knows when an update is coming, and are ready to see something new. Possibly a newsletter to let everyone know when things are coming.  Still putting ideas together for that.  So stay tuned for the first scheduled  Etsy update, on the third Friday of the month  (1/18).  Now I’m off to make things so I have something to show for this update.

NYCC: 2012 Late Wrapup

October 19th, 2012
Comments Off

As I prep for Rhinebeck I look at the items I picked up from NYCC and the four days I spent there having a blast, and the lucky dodge from ConCrud on Monday. But next year, if I do all four days with parties Friday and Saturday night again, which is likely I will take Monday to sleep and recover.

Captain America, Nikki Fury, Nick Fury, Captain America. I would have loved to have found a woman playing Captain America, but alas did not spot any though I did see a few USO girls.

Dr. Martha Jones with Gandalf and Bilbo made of lego. Also the best part of Comic Con is costumes. I made it to the Doctor Who Photo shoot on Sunday.

A conga line of angels….

Led by the wooden alien  from the Christmas Special.

Some Friends as the Doctor (here to help) and Oswin as well as Steampunk Idris and River. It was a fun Four days.  Now I have to cut this short as my ride is here.

Now I’m off to the car and to Rhinebeck. I’m in my zipperless red vivian and will have cards! Say Hi!
